Established in 1945, Oregon’s Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) is the retirement, disability, and health insurance fund for public employees in the state. Employees of state and local governments, as well as school districts, can be covered by PERS.

PERS serves approximately 210,000 active and inactive members, 135,000 benefit recipients, and 925 government employers. The system pays approximately $4 billion in benefits annually.

Oregon’s government employee system is among the most generous in the nation for benefits when compared to other state employees.
